Mum's Earthquake

New Zealand Earthquake Report
Saturday July 12 2008 at 12:08 pm (NZST)
Magnitude 5.9, 80 km south-west of Te Anau.

Benjamin Franklin said:
"In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes."

I have had an eventful 24 hours today: I paid my tax, I felt a moderate earthquake, and my mother died in my arms.

Oh I am so sorry. I flicked onto your blog just now -- as you do -- flicking, really, the eye flicking, the mind flicking, distracted by a phone call, and I see an earthquake chart and focus and try and decipher it. And then read the caption below.

And oh! My heart juddered. Only a little while ago I was looking at the photo of your Mum with the birthday cake. Her face, her nightie, her -- so like my Gran, so like a hundred thousand mothers and grandmothers. Tired, tidy, hopeful. And now I see she died in your arms on Saturday.

My heart goes out to you.
